By Joy Nzangi.

The Standard Gauge Railway is one project that came with a lot of influence and force in our country. Everyone in the country had been waiting for it and it finally came . It came with both advantages and disadvantages but I will be discussing how it has affected Mombasa in one way or another.

To begin with ,the SGR came along with its advantage of being fast, so many people preferred using it since it is fast compared to buses ,it takes approximately 5 hours from Mombasa to Nairobi. So due to this it affected the road transport especially the buses ,many people have shifted from using buses to the SGR.

It has also affected the economy of Mombasa positively. This is because we have more people who are coming into Mombasa county since an easier and less tiresome way of travelling has been found. So as they come if for whatever purpose either to have fun ,or for business purpose ,it is an addition to the economy of Mombasa.

The SGR also has a train used for carrying cargo from Mombasa to Nairobi the SGR used to transport cargo carries approximately 400 containers in one trip ,in a day it carries 1200  containers. This has increased the number of containers being transported in a day and has helped reduce congestion in the Mombasa ports.

Still on the same issue ,it has greatly reduced the number of  lorries on the roads since all containers were being transported through lorries earlier ,congestion has reduced on the roads and there is no jam between Mombasa and Nairobi. At the same time it led to lose of jobs to the lorry drivers who recently held a strike to ask the government to work on that issue.

In conclusion ,the SGR has brought both positive and negative changes in the country but it is good to accept change especially change that brings development in the country. The SGR has been one of the stimulants for development in Kenya.

ARE WE READY FOR THE DEADLY VIRUS.

By Joy Nzangi.

Corona! corona! Corona! Has been the song all over the country. Nobody had heard of it then it suddenly became the scariest virus around the whole world. Everyone is scared of it, nobody is yet sure whether it has gotten to our country Kenya yet even though some cases have been heard in Mombasa and Kisumu.

The government has declined this and told Kenyans that they are safe. Kenyans at the same time have been asking themselves many questions, What if people in our country get infected with the virus, is the government ready to deal with it? is the country ready to handle this tragedy or are we going to wait until it happens and the whole country will be a mess.

Well, that aside, the question here is does everyone really know about corona? The people in the rural areas, the people without phones and access to social media? The people in the North Eastern parts of Kenya who are so much into their traditions and might link it with witchcraft. What steps have the government taken to create awareness about this virus to Kenyans?

I have personally never heard of it my entire lifetime until recently, all I know is that it is a virus that kills very fast and is contagious. Gone are the days when HIV/AIDS was the deadliest disease and the most feared disease. Nowadays there are other viruses that have become more deadly and are killing more people more than ever, one being the one we are talking about now, corona virus.

Being a person who strongly believes in God, I believe that He is going to protect our country and our families from this deadly virus that we know very less about. The government should also give us an assurance that it is putting in place measures to handle this virus in case it gets into our country.

You can comment below and say what you think about this deadly virus or rather what you know about it. Don’t forget to comment, share and subscribe as usual. Thank you.

DANGEROUS FREEDOM SAFE CAPTIVITY.

By Joy Nzangi

I was excited like every other person was ,I couldn’t wait to meet new friends and know this big city of Mombasa. My parents finally left for home and there I was, life had to start. I could see student in very funny attires, others almost naked, wow! Is this the freedom I had heard was in University?

The notion that in Mombasa people walk half naked due to hot climate, I was now getting a bit scared. No one to wake me up to attend classes anymore unlike high school. This means I had a choice to make when it comes to class attendance. As soon as classes began I realized things were going to be different.

It is survival for the fastest rather than the famous say 'survival for the fittest.' Boys running after me and that angered me. An environment with No teacher to restrict you from anything you want to do. Life was wonderful, and risky at the same time.

I had never seen teenagers smoke 'Weed' before my eyes but this time they are doing it whenever they wish.

On weekends my room mates would go for parties and I’m left alone, that is where the temptation of joining companies for peer pressure comes in, but having gone for a short design course after my form four, I decided to find a side hustle and I got a sewing machine and started working with it.

Through this I got hooked up to some design agencies until I started working with great
designers and models around Mombasa. This  made me busy at the times I am not in class and it finally became part of me. Most people came to know of my work and have since trusted me to be their designer and tailor.

In campus, friends that make you happy are very important. Such friends bring happiness in our lives and in times of problems they share the bad times with us too, I used to hear of heartbreaks but this time I’m seeing them in real life, in my previous article of toxic relationships I discussed how to avoid toxic relationships especially among campus students.

Basically life in campus to me has been about exploring what I can do and balancing studies at the same time. If you are around Mombasa and want any design and tailoring services you can contact my number 0712290492.It is my pleasure to serve you as we strive through campus life.

Don’t forget to view, comment and share as you wait for my next article which is going to be more and more interesting as usual. Thank you.
