I thought I was dreaming, I had never imagined that one day I
would be a victim of such a disease. Diabetes had never ever crossed my mind, but
here it was. Four and a half years ago ,I was diagnosed with this condition ,it
was a shock to my family and friends and more so to me.
Life had changed, I had
to adjust to a completely new lifestyle. Injecting myself every single day was
a nightmare. I did not believe that I would do it. Being in high school gave me
more stress as I developed fear of expressing myself.
Most people did not
understand me. I thank God that I soon got used to the lifestyle of taking non
sugary foods all the time and injecting myself every morning and evening. I
managed to settle my mind and accept through counselling and attendance of
diabetes camps.
I developed a low immunity and this kept me on and off from
school. Life was not easy. Most of us live with diabetic people around us and
we do not understand them. High and low sugar are bad if not well managed.

Incase
one faints of low sugar a friend is supposed to be around to give the victim glucose
through the mouth this is to say a diabetic should not live alone unless under
special circumstances. Adjusting to this lifestyle needs support from everyone
around us.
Diabetes type 1 makes one very sensitive to many things. It is not
caused by consumption of a lot of sugar but it is the pancreas that fails to
produce insulin for unknown reasons. This
type of diabetes affects people between the age of 0-24.
It is managed through
injecting insulin twice or thrice a day some cases. As we talk right now I got
to know how to manage the condition and accepted it. I can manage both high sugar
and low sugar. Let us learn to understand people with diabetes around us to
prevent them from experiencing stress, high sugar, depression among other
effects.
For those who do not have the condition, exercise your body regularly
and eat the right foods to ensure your immunity is strong and the heart is
working well. Life is like a merry go round, we never know what next.
